Past times

The weather has been very bad for some time and it has affected the visits from my wild life friends.

They are still coming but for some reason not until the early hours of the morning. So here are some

older pictures of them.

This badger I discovered in the woods at the back of my house. His family are occasional visitors.
In my younger days when I went walking with my camera I had the feeling I was being watched, turning I snapped this roe deer before it ran off.
Sometimes animals when they get to know you are more obliging. This is a captive fox but was allowed to run freely so was very used to people. My foxes are getting close to this, I have been within touching distance of one of mine.
Sometimes an osprey will appear suddenly and fly right over your head. So I always carry a camera.

  1. Those of us who have close contact with wildlife are a privileged few, Mike, and those people for whom the biggest joy in life is a visit to the latest coffee shop have no idea what they are missing. All the best for 2024, for you, the foxes, the badgers and every other living thing - well, exclude a few politicians from that list! David

    1. Thankyou David, I think creatures know this and appreciate it and it develops trust. Wild animals have been killed by us over the centuries and it has developed a fear in all the young. It is up to us to treat young well and this fear will vanish. I have fondled many wild creatures in my life that have been rescued or injured and when they have been released they have just sat a few feet away and waited for my attention.

  2. Hello Mike :=) Lovely memories to have, and I love your photos. Regarding your foxes and getting within touching distance, I may be wrong but is it Sue who is most confiding. It's also been pouring down with rain these last two days. The birds are hunkering down in the conifers.
    All the best

    1. The rain has been heavy here too and the foxes have been leaving it much later in the night to have their meal. I have just looked out of the window and Dad fox was picking out the biscuits that he likes, he leaves the rest for his kids. The family have now split up and the kids live their own lives.

  3. I fully sympathise with your frustration with the weather, Mike, and I'm sure that your wild friends will be even more disadvantaged than you are too. Hopefully, they will come out of it unscathed, as will you.

I'm so pleased that you are able to fall back on some amazing memories of past encounters. Close contact with wildlife is to be cherished - as long as it doesn't put you in danger!

    Best wishes for 2024 - take good care - - - Richard

About Me

My photo
Evacuated during the second world war to a village in Yorkshire where I lived in the home of a good photographer for more than five years who taught me the basics and a great deal about nature. Well past retirement age I have been a wildlife photographer for more than 30 years. Red Kites have been my speciality for much of this period. I did spend several years snapping wheelchair athletes and organizing the British Road Race Championship. In the year 2000 I was awarded a distinction by the Royal Photographic Society for my portfolio on wheelchair athletes. Most of my pics are digital, using Sony cameras and Sigma lenses. I used to spend many weeks each year with friends in Wales which is close to the Elan Valleys where I got many of my raptor pics. I now get these pictures more closely to home, specially red kites and peregrines. I support my pension by selling my pics, cards, coasters, fridge magnets and key rings etc. at craft fairs, something I wish I had done much earlier in life. I give illustrated talks to clubs and societies on wildlife and other branches of photography that I have been involved in.
