Foxes getting popular


 The foxes are getting very popular in the village where I live. It is surrounded by farms with a lot of animals and one of the problems they have are rats. I explain to people with foxes around they will not have rats. My neighbours rats dissapeared several years ago when I started feeding the foxes. I only used the cameras to see who took the food. My cameras now sit in others gardens so we can all track our foxes. The number of rat sightings seems to have dropped dramatically.

    Hi Mike: It is amazing how people are generally very good at pointing out the "bad" side of wildlife while omitting their good points. A fox is a fine rodent catcher and should be celebrated for the good service it provides to the community. It. Is always touching to see the fellowship you have developed with these wonderful creatures. Take good care. David

      Hello David, You are quite right David. We have bin collection problems nearby and people have complained about foxes and rats running wild in the streets, until I pointed out the rats are running wild being chased by the foxes. The rat numbers are being reduced at a terrific rate. Take care,

    Hello Mike,:=) Well done Mike for informing the villagers that the fox is a good rodent catcher. It's a beautiful creature, and I'm pleased that it is getting the respect it deserves, and also pleased that your neighbours are taking an interest in watching them in their own gardens. It was kind of you to lend them your cameras.:=)

    It would seem, Mike, that the foxes have an excellent ambassador in your good self. I had no idea that they were useful in keeping down rodent populations. It is a while since I last saw a fox, which is more than a little disappointing for me as I think that they are beautiful creatures. Best wishes - stay safe - - - Richard

      Hello Richard, Gain the confidence of a fox and you have a friend for life. I have 3 foxes that visit and are no trouble,

    Such excellent news Mike. I am sure your neighbours, especially the farmers, are very happy of your success with foxes. It is such a shame that as a society we tend demonise foxes. More power to you elbow mate.

Evacuated during the second world war to a village in Yorkshire where I lived in the home of a good photographer for more than five years who taught me the basics and a great deal about nature. Well past retirement age I have been a wildlife photographer for more than 30 years. Red Kites have been my speciality for much of this period. I did spend several years snapping wheelchair athletes and organizing the British Road Race Championship. In the year 2000 I was awarded a distinction by the Royal Photographic Society for my portfolio on wheelchair athletes. Most of my pics are digital, using Sony cameras and Sigma lenses. I used to spend many weeks each year with friends in Wales which is close to the Elan Valleys where I got many of my raptor pics. I now get these pictures more closely to home, specially red kites and peregrines. I support my pension by selling my pics, cards, coasters, fridge magnets and key rings etc. at craft fairs, something I wish I had done much earlier in life. I give illustrated talks to clubs and societies on wildlife and other branches of photography that I have been involved in.
