My question answered

More than two years ago I noticed a drop in the number of creatures visiting my garden. I did a survery of all my local spots and found the same thing happening. Nobody else seemed to have noticed this. Not being so active these days I just look after my garden creatures. Then a few weeks ago I read in the local paper that a water company had been releasing toxic waste into local rivers etc. with devastating results. The company has been fined £90,000,000 not that it will do much good, their customers will end up paying it and it will take years for the waterways to recover. In the meantime the wildlife will suffer horrendously.  I shall make sure there is a fresh water supply as well as food in my garden.

I shall have to get Junior to spread the word where they can feed and drink safely. As you can see he is well fed and healthy. He calls every evening before midnight and sometimes brings a friend.

  1. It almost makes me weep when I learn of flagrant disregard for nature, especially involving deliberate, premeditated actions such as this. It is always very troubling for me that a "company" doesn't pollute the water, it is a living, breathing human being working for the company, a man or woman with a family and friends, who makes a conscious decision to discharge that effluent into the water. How do people get to that point? Where is their conscience?

    1. I quite agree with you David. How does a person with that mentallity deserve such a position. The people who pay his wages will now have to pay the fine. There must be a person that can be held responsable. Take care.

  2. Hi Mike
such people need to feel all the harshness of the law and they need to be shown openly in newspapers and other media. So that everyone knows who these people are, I can't understand that

    1. Hello Frank,
The problem is that this company is paid out out of public funds (rates0 so the public will pay the fine and the company will increase the cost of water which we will have to pay so the people responsable will get off scot free.

  3. That's the sort of anwer you could do without, Mike. Here we are in UK, hosting COP26, and our government refuses to take serious measures to prevent this sort of thing happening.

Thank you for doing your bit, and taking care of Junior and his friends.

    Best wishes - - - Richard

    1. There are some strange people in this world Ana and a lot of them are in a position of power. I live in a village which is on a short cut to the coast and we get a continual flow of traffic day and night and it has been monitored for air polution and it failed miserably and 3 years later it is still the same. I will do my best for the wildlife.

  5. That's very shocking Mike. It's a bit much when the people who are supposed to police these occurrences simply don't do their job but rely on the public to notice such things.

    1. The only people who care Phil are the ones with no financial gain. Few people have foresight, the skill of working out the results before the actions. Take care.

  6. Hello Mike, I'm saddened and angry that this sort of behaviour is happening, and it has taken so long for this dreadful crime to be discovered and made public. Reading your answers to the comments makes me even more angry, it's just not fair.

At least some creatures will have good food and water in your care. Thank you, and take good care of yourself.

    1. Hello Sonjia, It's as I told Phil it is lack of foresight, unablle to visulize the results of any actions they make. They are usually terrible drivers as well as polititians. Take care.

  8. Hello Mike,Thank you for your visit. I came to tell you that all the lovely red squirrels on the farm are being eaten by the foxes. The foxes just leave the heads which are being found on the ground by my foreman.

As squirrels run fast, and climb trees, I didn't think this was possible! Did you know that foxes eat squirrels?

    1. Hi Sonjia,
I have heard many stories about how evil foxes are. It is more than 75 years since I stroked my first fox. Foxes eat meat but I have never heard of one catching a squirrel to eat. It may devour a dead squirrel but I have never heard of a fox catching a live one. I have heard tales similar to this and they have all been proved wrong. Take care.

  9. Se debería castigar con mayor contundencia a todo el que contamina y el dueño de esa empresa debería de estar en la cárcel. Mike enhorabuena por la foto de tu vecino el joven zorro. Un abrazo desde el norte de España.

  10. Thankyou German, Nothing is going to happen to the culprits. They now say that it was accidental and they would be spending millions to correct it. Five years is a long accident and the money belongs to us because they failed to do whay we had paid for.

About Me

My photo
Evacuated during the second world war to a village in Yorkshire where I lived in the home of a good photographer for more than five years who taught me the basics and a great deal about nature. Well past retirement age I have been a wildlife photographer for more than 30 years. Red Kites have been my speciality for much of this period. I did spend several years snapping wheelchair athletes and organizing the British Road Race Championship. In the year 2000 I was awarded a distinction by the Royal Photographic Society for my portfolio on wheelchair athletes. Most of my pics are digital, using Sony cameras and Sigma lenses. I used to spend many weeks each year with friends in Wales which is close to the Elan Valleys where I got many of my raptor pics. I now get these pictures more closely to home, specially red kites and peregrines. I support my pension by selling my pics, cards, coasters, fridge magnets and key rings etc. at craft fairs, something I wish I had done much earlier in life. I give illustrated talks to clubs and societies on wildlife and other branches of photography that I have been involved in.
