My animals

These three pictures were taken on my infra-red camera within a few hours of each other last night. The camera was set about 1m from my front door. The hedgehog is one of 4 photographed last night.
The badger is one of a pair that live in a copse  about 200m down the road. It would have to come past a dozen houses to reach me. No wonder it doesn't come till about 3 in the morning.
The fox is 1 of 3 which come anytime. I find it astonishing for them to visit my garden. To do it they have to come down a well lit road that has traffic on it most of the night.

  2. How lucky you are to have all this wildlife visiting, Mike. My cameras (I currently have 3 out every night) are all set to video. You've got me thinking that maybe I should try stills! I think I'll give it a go on one of the cameras tonight.

Take great care, and stay safe - - - Richard

    1. I'm a still man myself Richard. I tried video but prefer stills. I entice them in with tit-bits and they tell their friends and so it goes. Good luck and stay safe. Mike.

  3. Well all I can say is that your garden must have a magic ingredient that animals like. Mind you, the average bod notices little that goes on around them in the wildlife stakes. I can well imagine those foxes strolling along as cars pass by. I hear so many stories about fearless foxes but none of those stories originate around here.

    1. It was by accident that I learned what went on in my garden at night. I knew I had an intruder and bought an infra-red camera and to my surprise it was a fox, at the time I was living in the middle of a town. I now live in a country village and with this lockdown I decided to dig the camera out and spend my time in the garden and put some tit-bits down to see what I could atract and I am delighted with the effort. That camera has taken as many as 590 shots in a night. I might get deer but I think my hedges are too high. Over the last two years I have recorded in my garden, wood mice, bank voles, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers. Stay safe. Mike.

About Me

My photo
Evacuated during the second world war to a village in Yorkshire where I lived in the home of a good photographer for more than five years who taught me the basics and a great deal about nature. Well past retirement age I have been a wildlife photographer for more than 30 years. Red Kites have been my speciality for much of this period. I did spend several years snapping wheelchair athletes and organizing the British Road Race Championship. In the year 2000 I was awarded a distinction by the Royal Photographic Society for my portfolio on wheelchair athletes. Most of my pics are digital, using Sony cameras and Sigma lenses. I used to spend many weeks each year with friends in Wales which is close to the Elan Valleys where I got many of my raptor pics. I now get these pictures more closely to home, specially red kites and peregrines. I support my pension by selling my pics, cards, coasters, fridge magnets and key rings etc. at craft fairs, something I wish I had done much earlier in life. I give illustrated talks to clubs and societies on wildlife and other branches of photography that I have been involved in.
